Irish online ad spend approaches €100m

Online advertising expenditure for 2009 reached €97.2 million according to the first IAB Ireland and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) ad spend study.

This strong performance was recorded despite a particularly challenging economic outlook and its devastating effect on the general advertising industry. The total Irish advertising market is estimated to be worth €940 million in 2009.

Digital formed a core part of the 2010 Discover Ireland domestic tourism campaign. The launch phase of this activity was focused on showing that taking a break was all about having fun and that Ireland was the perfect place to go to get away from it all. Therefore we made all our media selection choices around the guiding principle of the campaign: ‘The Fun Starts in Ireland’.

ABCe Figures up again for Independent Digital

CLOSE to 2.5 million unique users flocked to Independent News & Media's website in January, as coverage of the cold snap and the Iris Robinson affair drove traffic to record levels.

The latest audited figures from ABCe show the INM portal racked up 2.46 million unique users in the first month of the year, up 7pc on its October tally. Page views were also up, coming in at 34.4 million or 12pc above their October level.

Vizeum and its client Nicorette were presented with the Independent Digital Grand Prix award and a €10,000 ad campaign at the awards ceremony held in Dublin. The €10,000 campaign can be used on the Independent Digital network of sites.

The awards were set up to recognise brand/marketing managers and the creativity and effectiveness of their digital campaigns.

Internet news overtakes printed papers for US readers

For the first time ever, Americans are more likely to turn to the internet for news rather than printed newspapers or the radio, research revealed yesterday.

Internet and mobile phone technology had changed news "into a social experience", said the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, based in Washington DC.

Most respondents to a Pew survey said they turned to multiple sources for news – about 46pc used up to six different sources a day. The number of people going online has overtaken newspapers and radio and is fast catching up with the TV.

The new award - 'The Independent Digital Grand Prix Award' was designed to recognise brand/marketing managers and the creativity and effectiveness of their digital campaigns.
Each quarter, six campaigns were shortlisted from thousands of campaigns that ran on Independent.ie throughout 2009. Industry peers then voted in their thousands for their favourite campaign on www.idworks.ie with the campaign receiving the highest amount of votes from each quarter going through to the Grand Final.

The Independent Digital website has seen another consistent rise in users, according to figures just published from ABC Electronic (ABCe) – the online / digital arm of newspaper circulation auditors.

The websites attracted more than 2.3 m unique users, during October 2009*, with total page impressions for the month achieving over 30.7m both are up 4pc on the last audit.

Independent.ie is the first Irish national newspaper publisher to launch an iPhone app and is setting the trend globally being in the first wave of publishers to successfully charge for news apps. Customer satisfaction with the product was demonstrated by it becoming the No. 1 downloaded paid for app in the iTunes App Store on the day after its release and stayed in that position for a number of weeks. The app launched on 21 October 2009.
